At SETT Studios 16th – 20th October 2025
Firmament: a celestial barrier, from the Latin firmamentum meaning a ‘firm object’.
Since 2023, Edward Cawood has explored Prestongrange, the now-defunct industrial site once home to one of Scotland’s significant brick and tile works as well as its earliest collieries, with coal first extracted here in the 12th century by Cistercian monks.
Informed by archival research and Edward’s uniquely obsessive practice, Edward has produced a range of compelling works, from ‘textual objects’ to experimental photographs on tile, created through labour-intensive processes reflecting his thoughtful engagement with the site’s history and material legacy.
Firmament is a culmination of this body of work, with the artworks investigating themes of site, value, and industrial history.
Excitingly, the exhibition also includes new, never-before-exhibited works, offering a unique opportunity to see Edward’s latest ideas.
